Determinants of Resilience among Adults with Chronic Disease: A Systematic Literature Review

This systematic literature review aimed to identify and synthesize factors associated with resilience among adults with chronic physical illness. The review followed the PRISMA 2020 and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) 2020 guidelines. Literature was searched across six databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, EBSCO, and Google Scholar) for studies published between 2020 and 2026. Methodological quality was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist, and findings were synthesized using a structured narrative synthesis approach. Of the 3,818 records identified, 26 studies met the inclusion criteria. Factors associated with resilience were classified into five domains: psychological, spiritual, social, clinical, and sociodemographic. Self-efficacy and social support were the most consistent positive predictors, whereas depression, anxiety, and disease-related distress were consistently associated with lower resilience. These findings provide evidence to support the development of multicomponent resilience-based psychological interventions for individuals living with chronic physical illness.
